This year’s April’s showers may have been a tad too cold to foster any kind of May flowers, but that didn’t dampen our spirits for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign 2013 Spinathon.
The Yellow Pencil Edmonton office is directly across from the gorgeous Don Wheaton YMCA facility that many of us frequent daily. Terry, our team captain, competed in the event last year, and ended up winning. So naturally he was motivated to get a team together this year and fight for his title a second year in a row. No pressure!
Enter The Pedal Pushing Pencil Smashers!!
I know what you are thinking. “Whoa! They must be professional cyclists!” The crazy thing is we totally are not!
So our fabulous team of 5 got to fundraising, smashed our goal, and proudly contributed $1680 to an extremely worthy cause.
But our work was far from over. We now had to defend Terry’s title…
I knew it was going to be hard. I didn’t think it was going to be “cry home to your momma” hard. But the PPPS were all great motivators. We cheered and applauded when encouragement was needed, we trash talked and taunted when brow beating was required (“You're a maggot! I hate you!!!”)
We ate delicious food from Jugo Juice and Subway, then immediately regretted it when it came our turn on the bike again. Overall, it was a really fun day.
And it turns out; we could totally be professional cyclists! After 4 hours of silently begging and pleading with our legs to pump through the 121 miles (or was that just me?)… we won! We were measured by the amount of watts we pedaled and we beat the second place team by more than 5000! We did it for you, Terry! And the kids, of course.
Next stop, Tour de France!
